week nine- Snack Ideas

Hey friends! If you're new to the blog, welcome! This is a series where I post every Friday something ballet related- tips, tricks, what works for me, ect. Feel free to follow so you wont miss any!
This week, I have some easy snack idea's that work in between classes or long rehearsals. My dance school has a mini-fringe and microwave, so some of these have that in mind:-)
1. Yogurt & granola in a bag
2. Hard boiled egg that is pre-pealed
3. Sandwich cut into squares
4. Trail mix
5. Almonds, dried cranberries and dark chocolate chips in a bag- I am a sucker for this!
6. Humus and crackers
7. Pre-washed veggies
8. Soup
9. Smoothies
10. Homemade granola bars

A Letter to the Ten Year Old Me

Todays post is written by a friend of mine, who writes at her own beautiful blog here. I hope you enjoy it as much a I did!

Dear 10 year old me,
Wow, how time has flown! Was it really 6 years ago where you had no cares in the world? I remember how you would finish school every day around noon, and then go outside to build forts, hang out with friends, and play baseball for the remainder of the day. Now all you ever do is school, and worry about your looks, and care about what others say. But why do you care so much? Why do you worry so?

10 year old me, don’t get caught up in this world and all its pettiness. Don’t cry over boys who weren’t worth it. Don’t procrastinate homework to the point where it drives you insane. Keep some of that child-like innocence and playfulness with you. Give big hugs to others and tell the people you care about that you love them. Build more forts instead of putting on more makeup, and smile when things don’t go your way.

Most importantly Lizzy, keep your eyes focused on Jesus, not on the boy who seeks you attention, or that mean girl who won’t stop bullying you, or the C you just got on your science exam. No, focus on the love of Jesus Christ, on loving Him, and on loving others. If you remember that, you’ll be just fine throughout the next 6 years. I know you will be, don’t give up.

Week eight- streching & food

Well, it can be hard to stay motivated in the winter. With the cold, gross weather, and the occasional injury, it can be hard to stick with the stretching plan, or to eat on track. This week, let's get motivated to keep up our New Year's resolutions. 

STREACHING: I'm just going to admit right now, I am a terrible stretcher. I h-a-t-e laying with my legssprawled  on wall, trying to concentrate on my book instead of the ripping mussels in my inner thighs. So, I'm talking to myself as much as I am talking to you. These are my ideas: first of all, make it part of you routine. Use a theroband while you watch a movie, read a book while you stretch at night. Set a timer for a reasonable amount of time, and follow through on it. 

EATING HEALTHLY: Every one has different bodies, needs, and habits. It's fine to eat some chocolate cake, but keep those veggies in there too. Pack healthy snacks for on-the-go, and get some new ideas! I love making homemade granola bars and I would like to learn to make hummus. I family that I babysit for makes there own, and always has a huge tub- yum!! Search the internet for ideas; there are a lot of good ideas.

Overwhelmed with Love

Yesterday, the internet blew up. I could tell who lived in Washington State by Facebook statuses. Screaming at the TV was pretty common during the football game between the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay.   Seattle was behind, and was getting whopped on. Then, in the last two minutes they scored two touchdowns, ting the game they eventually won.  It was amazing. If your sitting, reading like "Why the heck is Elissa writing about football for heavens sake" stay with me.

If your new to the blog, I don't really write football commentary's. I write about ballet and coffee. And God. But there was something that happened at the end of this game, I cried. I seriously cried over a football game. (Not like sob cry's, but like, a few tears slipping down my face cried)

The quarter back was crying and the end of the game, and when he was asked about it by the news, he said, "I am just so overwhelmed. God is so faithful........God is so good."

And that's when I cried  teared up.

You guys, even when we lose, God is faithful. Even when life sucks, God is still good. His character doesn't change with our circumstances. His love is the same at every single stinking moment of your life. He is SO GOOD. So faithful. He is our rock, and we will not be shaken.

Week seven- Getting the Most out of Your Classes

~Getting the Most out of Your Classes~

Know the feeling of going to class, and feeling like your not making progress? Here are some tips to make sure you get the most out of you classes!

    • Arrive early. If you are coming from school, be efficient as you get ready. Do your hair in the car, and change once you get there. This will help you be calmer, and give you more time to get prepared for class.
    •  I don't know about you, but I cannot get much warming up done in the dressing room. I always end up talking or doing something else. Know yourself! Do you get distracted? Listen to some music, do some crunches, and find where you are sore. Get your feet warmed up. Upon coming back from my feet injury, I have developed a routine I use before every class- do the same! Find what works for your body. Your not just preparing your body, your preparing your mind. Get into a good mindset- block everything out, and inter into the world of dance:-)
    • Find a good spot at the barre. Don't stand by people who could distract you- I always try to be by someone better then me, and if I can, face a mirror on my left side. This always pushes me- when I'm looking at myself, I don't get lazy on the second side. 
    • Don't be obnoxious to the teacher- I have seen girls ask a bunch of questions, and make comments, and teachers do not like this. Ask a question if you have one- but make it snappy. Trust me. It's annoying.
    • Bring a water bottle
    • Stay focused
    •  And if you feel like your at a halting spot, talk to your teacher after class! Get advice- ask what they notice, and what you can work on.

      You, the girl with the kind heart.
      You, the girl with the inclusive sprit.
      Yes you.

      Why do you question your purpose?
      Why do you think you are not enough?
      Who told you that you were ugly? That you weren't beautiful?

      Girls, these are some of the biggest lies we can buy into. And you know what? That's what they are- lies. Lies we are bombarded with every time we buy something at the grocery store.  They show up in our movies. In our friends. We are part of an insecure generation of girls.

      Girls, why do we build huge walls all around us, protecting us from who-knows-what? Why do we compare ourselves with the superficial images at the checkout line in the grocery store? We wrestle with inadequacy, fear and self conciseness. We wish our lives looked different. More PB teen, less crushed granola bars.  

      But ladies, I cannot say it enough.
      You are valuable.
      You are enough.
      You are more then all of this.
      You have worth.
      A ultimate, never-changing, more-then-you-know, big, huge, and un-imaginable value.

      Let's make a change ladies.

      Week six- 36 Audition Tips

                             ~ 36 Audition Tips ~
            Because summer corse audition season is right around the corner, here are thirty-six audition tips!

      1. Do your research
      2. Know the style of dance
      3. Eat healthy- no junk or extreme diets!
      4. Plan what you are going to wear ahead of time
      5. Find out what the dress code is
      6. If pointe is included, have at least two pairs of working pointe shoes
      7. Make sure other dance shoes are in good condition- no holes or dirty soles
      8. Order any shoes, tights, leotards, etc., ahead of time
      9. Get pictures taken, if requested
      10. Talk to your instructors about the audition- get their pointers and input.
      11. E-mail or call the school or show, to see if the audition fee should be paid in cash or check
      12. Pre-register if possible
      13. Drink lots of water
      14. Focus of what is ahead of you- the "class"
      15. Be yourself, on and off paper
      16. Be early
      17. Fuel your body
      18. Keep your shoes in a small little bundle, ready to put on quickly
      19. Bring extras of everything
      20. Charge your iPod or phone
      21. Warm yourself up
      22. Feel your body, and stretch out what you need to
      23. Inspire yourself! You can do it!
      24. Make sure your hair is secure
      25. Be kind, but focused, to other dancers
      26. Have confidence
      27. Follow all instructions
      28. Pay attention to the teachers and your dancing- nothing else
      29. Ask questions about the combination if you are unsure; just make sure the teacher hasn't already said
      30. Don't panic if your not in the front; they make a point to look at everybody
      31. Enjoy yourself- show them you love to dance!
      32. Be aware of the space around you
      33. Show that you are willing to learn
      34. Don't frown
      35. Smile and say thank you to the teacher, and panel of people
      36. Wait patently, and remember- you are more then a yes or no.

      the Wraping Up of Christmas

      Ahh. We made it though New Year's people. I'm don't have anything against the holidays, and frankly, it's always a little sad when December is over. But this year, it was kind of like a marathon. Exhausting. Totally exhausting. 
         Party after party. The Nutcracker that I wasn't able to dance in. Exams. Getting my wisdom teeth out so my face could look great for Christmas photos. Seriously people. I look like a over weight chipmunk in 97% of the pictures. And then, the never ending list of gifts to buy. Okay, question: what do you do when a loose friend gets you some nice gift? And you are like, totally unprepared, much less have a gift for them. Awkward. 

          But because my birthday is also in December, it is kind of the gift jackpot for me.
      I got this sweater-

        My mom was on a fuzzy kick this year, which is great because fuzzy usually equals warm. And it has been feeling like the Arctic tundra lately. 

      And you thought I was lying about the cheeks. 

      So yeah. Now it's on the science fair panic and 25 page reports. The microscope has become part of  my room decor. And rubber gloves. Classy, I know.

      Week Five- Ballerina Inspired Updo

      Week five is here! For those of you who are new to the blog, welcome! Click here for more information about the series. Today, I will show you a hairstyle you could use for class or a fun night out! 

          Start with tangle-free hair. My lovely model has very straight hair, but this hairstyle works for all different types. Part your hair in a flattering place for you.

          Take about 2in. by 1in. of hair {this doesn't need to be exact)} and begin to braid. Once you have reached the end of the hair, do not use a rubber hairband {unless you are doing it on yourself}. You can have your client work those arm muscles :-) 

       Repeat the same process on the other side. 

      Your head should now look like this-

      While keeping the braids in front, gather the rest of the hair into a ponytail and secure it with a hairband.

      Now take the braids, and cris-cross them above the ponytail. Take a second hairband and rap it around. 

      Pull the hair slightly away from the head, and make a hole in the hair. Twist the hair upwards, and through the hole. 

      Repeate this 2-3 times depending on the length of your hair. On the last twist, tuck the ends in and put in bobby pins {or hair pins} to keep in in place. 
      And villa!

      Ballerinas- to wear for class, just follow until the braids are secured with a ponytail holder. Then make your bun as usual :-)
